What the Shadow pattern looks like day to day

Shadows tend to keep a person in range. They move rooms when you move, settle a metre away rather than on top of you, and reappear in the chair you have just left. The attachment is usually specific: one or two familiar people rather than the household in general, and often noticeably cooler toward visitors.

Activity tends to run low and comfort-oriented, so the day has fewer sprints and more relocation. Contact is often sought on their terms and in familiar contexts — the same chair, the same hour, the same side of the sofa — which is why disruptions to routine can read as sulking when they are closer to recalibration.

Common misreadings

Clingy, and should be discouraged.

Proximity-seeking toward a familiar person is ordinary feline social behaviour. It becomes worth attention only when the cat cannot settle at all in that person's absence.

Unfriendly, because visitors get nothing.

A narrow social circle is a preference, not a deficit. Most Shadows are affiliative — the affiliation is simply pointed at a short list.

Living with a Shadow cat

• A resting place in whichever room you use most tends to get more use than a dedicated cat bed elsewhere.
• Let approaches be initiated rather than collected; the pattern responds better to invitation than retrieval.
• When routines have to change, changing them gradually usually costs less than changing them cleanly.
