What the trait describes
Same-species sociability describes comfortable, friendly, or neutral behaviour around familiar animals of the same species: whether the animal shares space willingly, initiates or accepts interaction, and remains relaxed in the other animal's presence. Neutral counts. A cat that ignores the resident second cat entirely while remaining relaxed is scoring well on this dimension, and a great deal of successful multi-cat cohabitation looks exactly like that.
The dimension is gated on exposure. Pawsanality only scores it when the animal has had genuine, safe opportunity to interact with its own species, because behaviour that has never occurred cannot be rated. This is why the trait is more often returned as unavailable than any other, and why that outcome is a correct answer rather than a failure.
It is scored against familiar animals rather than unfamiliar ones. Reactions to a strange dog on the pavement are shaped heavily by novelty sensitivity and by context, and folding them into this dimension would produce a score that describes lead-walking more than sociability.
Where the trait comes from in the research
Conspecific sociability is separated from human-directed sociability in every major instrument, which is the strongest available evidence that the separation is real rather than fussy. The C-BARQ carries distinct dog-directed fear and dog-directed aggression scales alongside its stranger-directed and owner-directed scales. The Dog Personality Questionnaire recovers sociability toward dogs as distinguishable from sociability toward people. The Fe-BARQ similarly separates sociability toward cats from sociability toward people.
In cats, the Finnish work on seven feline behaviour and personality traits treats sociability toward cats and sociability toward humans as separate measured traits, and finds different patterns of association for each. A subsequent large study of dogs likewise found breed, age, and social environment associated with personality variation, with social dimensions among those most sensitive to the social environment the animal actually lives in.
For cats specifically, the veterinary guidance is unusually direct. The AAFP intercat tension guidelines describe cats as facultatively social — capable of forming social groups, but not obligately requiring them — and note that a great deal of household intercat tension is silent, expressed through resource avoidance and spatial separation rather than through overt fighting.
How Pawsanality scores it
The items ask about frequency of specific behaviour with familiar same-species companions: sharing resting areas, relaxed proximity, friendly approach, tension or avoidance around resources. Scores are averaged onto the same 0-100 scale as every other trait.
The applicability gate is what makes this dimension unusual. If the answers indicate the animal has not had safe, regular exposure to its own species, Pawsanality returns the trait as unavailable and excludes it from archetype matching rather than substituting a default. An only cat in a single-cat household genuinely has not told you how it would behave with another cat, and a confident-looking number in that position would be an invention.
This has a practical consequence worth knowing: a profile with this trait unavailable is matched against the remaining six dimensions. The result is still valid, but it is a six-dimensional match, and the archetype it returns carries slightly less information than one from a fully scored profile.
Reading a high score
A high score describes an animal that is genuinely comfortable with its own species: relaxed shared space, willing interaction, and low tension around resources. In dogs this usually shows as easy greeting behaviour and successful play. In cats it shows as allogrooming, shared resting spots, and — importantly — the absence of the quiet avoidance patterns that mark intercat tension.
A high score is not a guarantee about any specific future introduction. It describes behaviour with familiar animals, and introductions involve unfamiliar ones, where novelty sensitivity does much of the work.
- In dogs, enthusiasm is not consent. High sociability describes your animal's comfort, not the other animal's willingness to be approached.
- In cats, absence of fighting is weak evidence. Look for shared space and relaxed proximity, not merely the absence of overt conflict.
- Even with a high score, staged introductions outperform improvised ones.
Reading a low score
A low score describes an animal that prefers more space from its own species. This is an entirely ordinary result, particularly in cats, and it is not a behaviour problem. It is information about what kind of household suits the animal.
The most useful thing a low score can do is prevent a decision. Adding a second cat to a household containing a low-scoring resident is the single most common source of long-running, hard-to-resolve feline welfare problems, and it is usually undertaken with the best intentions and the assumption that company will be welcome.
Where a low-scoring animal already lives with others, the intervention is spatial rather than social. Duplicated and separated resources — food, water, litter, resting places, exit routes — reduce the number of moments that require negotiation, which is what the veterinary guidance on intercat tension recommends and what usually works.
How it interacts with the other six traits
With human affiliation, this trait is close to orthogonal, and that independence is the single most useful thing the profile tells a multi-pet household. The devoted, people-oriented animal that finds its own species difficult is a common and entirely coherent profile, not a contradiction.
With novelty sensitivity, it determines how introductions go rather than how cohabitation goes. A high-sociability, high-novelty animal typically needs a slower introduction and then settles well. A high-sociability, low-novelty animal introduces easily. A low-sociability animal with low novelty sensitivity may introduce smoothly and then develop tension weeks later, which is the pattern most likely to be misread as something having gone wrong.
With behavioral regulation, the pairing predicts recovery. Two animals with good regulation can have a disagreement and return to baseline. Where regulation is low on either side, single incidents are more likely to establish lasting avoidance, which is why the regulation score is worth reading before deciding how much a one-off scuffle mattered.
Before you add a second animal
This trait exists largely to inform one decision, and it is a decision that is difficult to reverse once made. Rehoming a second animal that has not settled is hard on everyone involved, so the score is most valuable read before the addition rather than after.
For cats, the veterinary guidance is more cautious than popular advice tends to be. Cats are facultatively social — capable of forming social groups where resources and early experience support it, but under no obligation to want one. The AAFP intercat tension guidelines emphasise that much household tension is silent, expressed through resource avoidance, spatial partitioning, and one cat quietly ceding territory rather than through anything an owner would recognise as fighting. A resident cat scoring low on this dimension is telling you the odds are poor, and adding a kitten does not change them.
Where an addition goes ahead, the structural work matters more than the introduction protocol. Duplicated and physically separated resources — food, water, litter trays, resting places, and crucially more than one route out of any room — reduce the number of daily moments that require two animals to negotiate. Most successful multi-cat households are successful because the cats rarely have to compete, not because they are friends.
For dogs, the equivalent question is compatibility rather than sociability alone. Matching energy level and play style predicts cohabitation better than a friendliness score does, and a high-sociability dog paired with an incompatible one still produces a difficult household.
- Count resources before counting animals: the working rule for cats is one of each key resource per cat plus one spare, placed apart rather than in a row.
- A resident animal scoring low here is the strongest single argument against adding another of its species.
- Judge success on relaxed shared space over weeks, not on the absence of conflict in the first fortnight.
What this trait is not
It is not a measure of aggression. Aggression is context-specific, frequently defensive, and outside what a general personality questionnaire can responsibly assess.
It is not a prediction about a specific animal. Compatibility is a property of a pair, not of an individual.
It is not permanent. Social environment is among the factors most consistently associated with variation in this dimension, and it can move with circumstances.
When it stops being personality
New tension between animals that previously coexisted is one of the more reliable indicators that something has changed medically for one of them. Pain in particular alters tolerance, and an animal in discomfort will frequently reduce its willingness to share space before showing any recognisable sign of being unwell. In cats this often appears first as resource avoidance rather than conflict.
Escalation to genuine fighting, injury, or a resident animal that stops eating, stops using the litter tray, or stops occupying its normal spaces is not a personality matter and is not addressed by a questionnaire. It warrants a veterinary consultation for both animals and, where medical causes are excluded, a qualified behaviourist. Aversive interventions in same-species conflict carry documented welfare costs and a real risk of making the association worse.
