Chase and play motivation

Play is the trait most often treated as decoration and most often responsible for the behaviour people find hardest to live with. It is also the one where the fix is usually structural rather than corrective.

What the trait describes

Chase and play motivation describes how strongly an animal is drawn to pursue moving things and to engage in object or social play. In cats Pawsanality scores this as predatory and play motivation — stalking, chasing, pouncing, manipulating objects, initiating games. In dogs it is scored as chase and play motivation, covering pursuit of moving stimuli and participation in toy or social play.

What makes this dimension distinctive is that it describes a sequence rather than a mood. Predatory and chase behaviour has a structure — orient, stalk, pursue, capture, and in cats consume — and a high-motivation animal is drawn to run the whole thing. This is why a game that never reaches a catchable ending can leave a high-scoring animal more wound up than when it started, and why the resolution matters as much as the exercise.

The behaviour is normal, species-typical, and not something to be trained away. It is also, in both species, one of the strongest available levers for welfare, because an animal with a satisfying outlet for it is generally an easier animal in every other respect.

Where the trait comes from in the research

Play and predatory motivation are separated from general activity in the major instruments, which is the evidence that they are not simply energy under another name. The Fe-BARQ carries playfulness and prey interest as distinct scales; the Finnish seven-trait feline work recovers activity/playfulness as a measured trait alongside separate sociability and fearfulness dimensions; and the Feline Five recovers extraversion with substantial play content.

In dogs, the C-BARQ carries chasing as a distinct scale separate from excitability and energy level, the Dog Personality Questionnaire recovers activity/excitability with play content loading alongside it, and the Monash instrument recovers motivation as a dimension in its own right across independent validations.

The applied literature is unusually practical here. For cats, controlled work on food puzzles documents benefits for both physical and emotional wellbeing, and the AAFP and ISFM environmental needs guidelines identify opportunity for play and predatory behaviour as one of the five pillars of a healthy feline environment — not an optional extra. For dogs, work on olfactory and auditory enrichment in kennelled animals shows measurable behavioural change from providing appropriate outlets.

How Pawsanality scores it

The items ask about frequency of specific play and pursuit behaviour: initiating games, pursuing moving objects, engaging with toys, carrying or manipulating objects, responding to movement. Answers are scored on the frequency scale and averaged onto 0-100.

Asking about initiation is again what keeps the measurement clean. An animal that plays enthusiastically when you start a game but never starts one itself is telling you something different from one that brings you a toy unprompted, and only the second is clearly reporting high intrinsic motivation.

This dimension is more sensitive than most to opportunity. An animal with no suitable outlets available may score lower simply because the behaviour has had nowhere to occur, which is a real limitation of owner-report measurement and worth holding in mind when a score comes back lower than the animal's history would suggest.

Reading a high score

A high score describes an animal for whom play is a genuine daily requirement rather than an entertainment. In cats this typically means the full predatory sequence needs somewhere to happen; in dogs it means movement of almost any kind registers as an invitation, and the invitation is difficult to decline.

The practical consequence is that outlets have to be provided deliberately, because a high-motivation animal that is not given a legal target will select an illegal one — ankles, the other pet, the cyclist, the livestock. Most of what gets described as a behaviour problem in this profile is a supply problem.

  • Let games end in a capture. A chase with no resolution tends to wind the sequence up rather than complete it.
  • For cats, food puzzles convert eating into foraging and suit this profile particularly well; the evidence base for them is solid.
  • For dogs, manage the chase around traffic, wildlife and livestock — motivation at this level overrides recall reliably.

Reading a low score

A low score describes a selective player: an animal that engages with play under the right conditions rather than seeking it out. This is ordinary, and in adult animals it is common. It does not mean the animal is depressed or under-stimulated.

What it does mean is that the successful approach is invitation rather than persistence. Short, low-pressure offers with an easy exit generally work better than sustained attempts to generate enthusiasm, and finding the specific modality the animal does respond to — scent, a particular texture, a particular movement — usually matters more than frequency.

As with activity, the score worth attention is the one that has fallen. A cat or dog that used to play and has stopped is reporting something, and it is rarely a change of personality.

How it interacts with the other six traits

With behavioral regulation, this pairing is the single most predictive combination in the whole profile. High chase motivation with good regulation is an animal that plays hard and stops. High chase motivation with poor regulation is an animal that cannot exit the sequence once it has entered, and it is behind most of what households describe as overexcitement. Reading the play score without the regulation score beside it gives an actively misleading picture.

With activity, the two compound. An animal high on both is not merely energetic — it is energetic with a specific outlet requirement that general exercise does not satisfy, which is why long walks and long ball sessions often fail to produce the expected calm.

With same-species sociability, chase motivation determines whether interaction with other animals stays play or becomes pursuit; the distinction is frequently invisible to the pursuing animal and entirely clear to the pursued one. And with human affiliation, it determines whether the play needs you: high motivation with low affiliation produces an animal content to self-entertain, while high on both produces one whose primary request is your participation.

Designing an outlet that resolves

The recurring mistake with a high-motivation animal is providing volume without completion. A laser pointer is the clearest example: it produces the entire predatory sequence except the capture, and the sequence has no way to end. Some cats tolerate this; a meaningful number become visibly frustrated by it, and the frustration is a predictable consequence of the design rather than a quirk of the individual.

For cats, the fix is to make sure every session lands somewhere. A wand toy that ends in a catch the cat can hold and carry off completes the sequence in the way the animal is built to expect, and following it with food maps onto the natural order of hunt and eat. Food puzzles extend the same logic into daily feeding, converting a passive event into a foraging task; the published work on them documents benefits for both physical and emotional wellbeing. Wand toys have the additional advantage of keeping hands out of the target zone, which matters more in this profile than in any other.

For dogs, the equivalent design question is what the chase is aimed at and how it stops. Repeated high-arousal ball chasing tends to raise the baseline rather than spend it, particularly where regulation is low, and substituting scent work or structured retrieve games with clear start and end signals usually produces a calmer animal for the same time invested. Where the motivation is strong enough to override recall — which at the top of this scale it generally is — management around traffic, livestock and wildlife is not a training question but a safety one.

What this trait is not

It is not aggression. Predatory and chase behaviour are motivationally distinct from conflict behaviour, they typically lack the vocalisation and threat display that mark aggression, and treating them as the same thing leads to interventions that do not work.

It is not a training failure. Motivation at this level is species-typical and heritable in part; the objective is redirection to an appropriate target, not elimination.

It is not restricted to young animals. Intensity often moderates with age, but the underlying preference generally persists.

When it stops being personality

Loss of interest in play is a well-recognised early indicator of illness and pain in both species, and it is regularly attributed to the animal getting older. In cats especially, reduced play and reduced jumping frequently reflect osteoarthritic pain rather than age itself, and the condition is substantially underdiagnosed.

A sharp increase in pursuit intensity, or pursuit that begins targeting household members or other animals where it previously did not, is also a change rather than a trait. Where either has appeared over weeks rather than years, a veterinary consultation comes before any behavioural plan. Where the behaviour is long-standing and the concern is management, reward-based redirection has the evidence behind it; aversive suppression of predatory behaviour has documented welfare costs and a poor record of working.
