What the trait describes
Behavioral regulation describes an animal's capacity to settle: how predictably it returns to baseline after excitement, how well it tolerates delay and small frustrations, and how readily it disengages from something arousing. It is not calmness. A genuinely low-energy animal can score poorly on regulation, and a very high-energy animal can score well.
The distinction between arousal and regulation is the useful one. Arousal is how far up the animal goes; regulation is how reliably it comes back down and how long that takes. Two dogs can reach the same peak during play, and the one that is lying down four minutes later is telling you something quite different from the one still pacing twenty minutes later.
Pawsanality scores this dimension for both species with parallel logic, though the observable behaviours differ. In dogs it shows in recovery after excitement, tolerance of waiting, and ability to disengage. In cats it shows in predictability, recovery after startling, and tolerance of small disruptions to routine.
Where the trait comes from in the research
Regulation-adjacent dimensions appear across instruments under several names. The Feline Five recovers impulsiveness as a distinct factor, which is largely this construct approached from the other end. The Finnish seven-trait feline work separates activity/playfulness from several regulation-relevant scales, and the Fe-BARQ carries multiple scales bearing on arousal and recovery.
In dogs, the Dog Personality Questionnaire recovers a calmness factor separable from activity/excitability, and the C-BARQ carries excitability and attachment/attention-seeking as distinct scales. The Monash instrument recovers neuroticism and self-assuredness as related dimensions with regulation content. Across instruments, the recurring structure is that energy and control load separately, which is why an instrument that reports only one of them gives a misleading picture.
The meta-analysis on personality consistency in dogs is directly relevant here: consistency was found to be lower in juvenile animals than in adults across trait domains. Regulation is the dimension where this matters most in practice, because it is the one owners most often expect to be permanent when it is still developing.
How Pawsanality scores it
The items ask about frequency of observable recovery behaviour: how long the animal takes to settle after something exciting, whether it can wait without escalating, whether it disengages from a stimulus when the stimulus stops, and how predictable its behaviour is across ordinary days. Answers are scored, reversed where the item is worded toward dysregulation, and averaged onto the 0-100 scale.
Asking about recovery rather than about peak intensity is the design decision that separates this dimension from activity. 'How excited does your dog get?' measures arousal. 'How long does it take your dog to settle afterwards?' measures regulation. The second question is the one that predicts what living with the animal is like.
Regulation is also the dimension most affected by the four-week window. Recent disruption — a house move, a new animal, a change in household schedule, an illness — depresses this score, and the instrument will report that faithfully. A low score during an unsettled period is a description of the period, not of the animal.
Reading a high score
A high score describes an animal that comes back down. Excitement resolves, waiting is tolerable, and disruption is absorbed without a long tail. This is the profile that makes almost every other trait easier to live with: a high-activity animal that regulates well is energetic and manageable, and a novelty-sensitive animal that regulates well is careful without being fragile.
The main thing to avoid at this end is complacency about signals. An animal that absorbs disruption well will also absorb early discomfort without making it obvious, so regulation and under-reporting tend to travel together.
- High regulation is what makes a high score elsewhere an asset rather than a management burden.
- It is the trait most worth protecting during periods of household change.
- A drop from a previously high score is more informative than a consistently moderate one.
Reading a low score
A low score describes an animal that takes longer to return to baseline: excitement builds quickly and dissipates slowly, waiting is genuinely difficult, and disruptions have a long tail. In cats this often looks like the midnight sprint and difficulty settling after play. In dogs it looks like the inability to stop after a game has ended.
The most common and least effective response is more exercise. Repeated high-arousal activity generally raises the baseline rather than spending it, and long chase sessions in particular tend to make a low-regulation animal harder rather than easier to live with. Settling is more usefully treated as a skill to be built than as a state to be exhausted into.
The second most common error is escalating pressure. There is direct experimental evidence that aversive training methods produce measurably poorer welfare outcomes in dogs, and comparative work finds reward-based methods at least as efficient. Increasing pressure on a dysregulated animal increases arousal, which is the variable already causing the problem.
How it interacts with the other six traits
Regulation is the modifier for the whole profile, which is why it is worth reading second, immediately after whichever trait scored most extremely. High activity with high regulation is a busy, settleable animal; high activity with low regulation is the profile behind most complaints about a household being unmanageable. The activity score did not change — its meaning did.
With chase and play motivation, low regulation is what turns play into overstimulation, because the animal cannot exit the sequence it has entered. With novelty sensitivity, low regulation converts ordinary caution into a long and uncomfortable recovery, shifting the useful intervention from patience to predictability.
With human affiliation, the pairing determines what proximity looks like: high affiliation with good regulation produces an animal that settles near you, while high affiliation with poor regulation produces one that wants to be near you and cannot be still about it. And in dogs, regulation frequently constrains trainability in practice — a dog that cannot settle cannot attend, regardless of how willing it is.
Building settling as a skill
The most useful reframe for a low regulation score is that settling is a behaviour that can be practised, not a state the animal either reaches or fails to reach. Households that treat it as a skill generally make progress; households that treat it as an outcome of sufficient exercise generally do not.
The mechanics are unglamorous. Settling improves when calm is reinforced while it is happening rather than requested once arousal is already high, which means the practice has to start from a low baseline. Rewarding a dog for lying down quietly at a moment when nothing is happening teaches something; asking for a settle in the middle of a high-arousal episode mostly teaches that the cue arrives at unpleasant moments.
Structure helps in both species. Interleaving short calm intervals into play rather than running one continuous session gives the animal repeated practice at coming back down, which is the specific thing a low-regulation animal is poor at. Ending activity with a deliberate wind-down — a final capture, then food, then quiet — resolves the sequence rather than truncating it, and truncation is what tends to leave an animal pacing.
What does not help is escalation. Increasing pressure raises arousal, and arousal is the variable already causing the problem; the controlled evidence on aversive versus reward-based training in dogs points the same way. For cats, the equivalent error is continuing an interaction past the point of tolerance, which trains the animal to expect that engagement ends badly.

- Protect sleep and routine during household upheaval; both feed this dimension more than most owners expect.
What this trait is not
It is not obedience. An animal can regulate well and ignore every cue you give it; these are separate dimensions and dogs are scored on both.
It is not temperament in the colloquial sense. It says nothing about friendliness, and a poorly regulated animal is not a badly behaved one.
It is not fully formed in young animals. Consistency in this domain is measurably lower in juveniles, and a score taken during adolescence should be treated as provisional.
When it stops being personality
A decline in regulation is among the more common behavioural presentations of underlying medical problems, and in older animals it is one of the recognised signals of cognitive change. New difficulty settling, disrupted sleep, pacing, or a loss of previously reliable recovery are not personality developments.
Pain is again the frequent and frequently missed driver. An animal in discomfort has less capacity for tolerance, and the first visible consequence is often a shortened fuse rather than any obvious sign of pain. Where regulation has changed noticeably over weeks or months, the appropriate next step is a veterinary consultation. Where it has always been low and the concern is management rather than change, a qualified behaviourist working with reward-based methods is the route with actual evidence behind it.
