What the trait describes
The activity dimension describes spontaneous engagement with the environment: how much an animal moves of its own accord, how readily it investigates, and how intensely it responds when something interesting happens. It is not a measure of fitness, and it is not a measure of how much exercise the animal is currently getting. It describes the baseline the animal brings to an ordinary day.
Pawsanality names this dimension differently for the two species, because the behaviours that define it differ. In cats it is scored as Activity & Exploration, weighted toward investigation, climbing, and environmental curiosity. In dogs it is scored as Activity & Excitability, weighted toward baseline activity and the intensity of the response when something happens. The underlying construct is related, but the observable behaviour is not interchangeable, and a shared question set would measure neither species well.
The distinction is worth holding onto when comparing a cat and a dog in the same household. A cat scoring 80 on exploration and a dog scoring 80 on excitability are not describing the same thing. The cat is telling you it investigates a great deal; the dog is telling you it escalates quickly. Those imply different households, different enrichment, and different problems.
Where the trait comes from in the research
An activity or extraversion-adjacent factor appears consistently across companion animal personality instruments. In cats, the Feline Five recovers extraversion as one of its five dimensions, and the Finnish work on feline behaviour and personality traits recovers activity/playfulness as a separately measurable trait. The Fe-BARQ separates activity from playfulness and from several other behaviour scales, which is a useful reminder that the cluster is not perfectly unitary.
In dogs, the Dog Personality Questionnaire recovers both an activity/excitability factor and a separate responsiveness-to-training factor, while the C-BARQ separates excitability from energy level. The Monash instrument recovers extraversion and motivation as related but distinguishable dimensions. Across instruments, the recurring finding is that 'how much the animal does' and 'how strongly the animal reacts' are correlated without being the same thing.
A large study of dogs found breed, age, and social environment all associated with personality trait variation, with activity-related dimensions among those showing age effects most clearly. This is the trait most likely to shift over an animal's life, which is worth remembering before treating a score taken at eighteen months as a permanent property.
How Pawsanality scores it
The questions ask about frequency of specific behaviour over roughly the past four weeks: how often the animal initiates movement without prompting, investigates something new in the home, seeks out height or new vantage points, or escalates in response to an ordinary trigger. Items are scored on a frequency scale, reversed where appropriate, and averaged into a 0-100 raw score.
Because this dimension is unusually sensitive to circumstance, the four-week window does real work. An animal recovering from illness, a dog whose walks have been curtailed by weather, or a cat in a household that has recently become much quieter will score lower than the same animal would have scored two months earlier. That is not measurement error — it is the instrument correctly reporting the period you were asked about — but it does mean the score should be read as current rather than essential.
As with every Pawsanality trait, answering 'not observed' to too many items in this dimension returns the trait as unavailable rather than estimating it. A cat with no access to height has not given you the evidence to score its interest in height.
Reading a high score
A high score describes an animal that generates its own activity. In cats this usually looks like patrolling, climbing, and a standing interest in whatever has changed since the last inspection. In dogs it looks like readiness — the dog is available for whatever is about to happen, and frequently available before anything is.
The most common mistake with a high score is treating volume of exercise as the answer. For cats, environmental complexity generally does more than duration: vertical routes, rotated objects, and food puzzles that make foraging a task rather than an event. For dogs, varied and scent-rich routes typically do more per minute than the same loop made longer, and there is direct evidence that olfactory enrichment changes behaviour in kennelled dogs.
- High activity paired with high regulation is a busy animal that still settles. High activity paired with low regulation is a different problem entirely.
- For cats, food puzzles have documented benefits for physical and emotional wellbeing and suit this profile particularly well.
- Repetition tends to cost more than distance. Novelty within a route is doing most of the work.
Reading a low score
A low score describes an animal content with familiar ground: less spontaneous investigation, lower baseline movement, and a milder response when something happens. In a healthy adult animal this is an ordinary and entirely liveable profile, and often a pleasant one.
The reading to be careful about is the assumption that a low-activity animal needs nothing. Enrichment still matters; it simply needs to arrive at lower intensity and on the animal's terms. Short, low-pressure invitations tend to work better than attempts to raise the baseline, and a low score is not an instruction to make the animal busier than it wants to be.
The other caution is temporal. A genuinely low-activity animal has usually always been that way. A score that has dropped is a different signal, and belongs in the next section.
How it interacts with the other six traits
Activity is close to meaningless without behavioral regulation beside it. The two together describe not just how much the animal does but whether it can stop, and almost every practical question about a high-activity animal is really a question about the regulation score.
The pairing with novelty sensitivity determines where the activity goes. High activity with low novelty sensitivity produces an animal that explores widely and confidently — the profile most likely to find the gap in the fence. High activity with high novelty sensitivity produces something more paradoxical: an animal with energy to spend and a reluctance to spend it in unfamiliar places, which often reads as frustration and usually responds to making the familiar territory more interesting rather than expanding it.
With chase and play motivation, activity compounds. An animal high on both is not simply energetic; it is energetic with a specific and demanding outlet requirement. With human affiliation, activity determines whether that outlet has to involve you: a high-activity, high-affiliation dog wants to do things together, while a high-activity, low-affiliation dog is largely content to do them alone.
What good enrichment actually looks like
Enrichment for this dimension is frequently bought rather than designed, and the purchase is usually the least important part. What the research supports is fairly specific, and it is more about structure than about equipment.
For cats, the AAFP and ISFM environmental needs guidelines organise this around providing multiple separated key resources, opportunities for play and predatory behaviour, and an environment that respects the cat's need for a sense of control. In practice that means vertical routes rather than more floor toys, several resting and feeding locations rather than one, and — where the evidence is strongest — converting some proportion of daily food into a foraging task. Controlled work on food puzzles documents benefits for both physical and emotional wellbeing, and they suit a high-exploration cat better than almost anything else available.
For dogs, the useful lever is variety and scent rather than distance. Work on olfactory and auditory enrichment in kennelled dogs found measurable behavioural change from providing appropriate sensory input, and the same principle transfers to household walks: a route that permits sustained sniffing does more per minute for a high-activity dog than the same route walked faster or extended. Rotation matters in both species — the same enrichment left permanently available stops being enrichment and becomes furniture.
What this trait is not
It is not a fitness measure. An unfit animal can score high on activity and a very fit one can score low; the trait describes disposition, not capacity.
It is not hyperactivity. Clinical hyperactivity is rare, specific, and diagnosed by a veterinarian. A high questionnaire score describes an ordinary position on an ordinary dimension.
It is not a training outcome. Activity level is not something to be trained away, and attempts to suppress it generally displace the behaviour rather than removing it.
When it stops being personality
A drop in activity is one of the more reliable early signals that something is physically wrong, and it is frequently attributed to age when age is not the cause. Reduced movement, less investigation, and withdrawal from previously enjoyed activity are common presentations of pain, particularly osteoarthritic pain, which is substantially underdiagnosed in both species and especially in cats.
A rise in activity is less common but equally worth attention, particularly when it arrives with restlessness rather than engagement, disrupted sleep, or changes in appetite. Neither direction is a personality development if it appeared over weeks rather than years, and neither is well served by a questionnaire. The right next step is a veterinary consultation, not a retake.
